Νορβηγός τουρίστας: Η Σκόπελος είναι ένα όμορφο μέρος, αλλά η ταλαιπωρία των ζώων κάνει την εμπειρία γλυκόπικρη...

Επιστολή στον Δήμαρχο Σκοπέλου, τους Αντιδημάρχους και τον Πρόεδρο του Δημοτικού Συμβουλίου Σκοπέλου, η οποία κοινοποιείται στην Efimerida-Sporades.Online, στο Vetcare Skopelos, στο Υπουργείο Τουρισμού, στο Υπουργείο Αγροτικής Ανάπτυξης και Τροφίμων, στην Ελληνική διάσωση ζώων, και στους Τουριστικούς Αστυνομικούς Σταθμούς Βόλου και Σκιάθου έστειλε Νορβηγός Τουρίστας, ο οποίος μένει αυτή την περίοδο στη Σκόπελο.

ΑΡΧΕΙΟ

Ο κ. Jørgen Tellefsen Relling, αναφέρει ότι ανησυχεί:

«για το πώς φέρονται ορισμένοι ιδιοκτήτες σκύλων στα σκυλιά τους» και ότι «Στο Έλιος / Νέο Κλήμα έχω συναντήσει σκυλιά που μένουν μόνα τους σε κλουβιά όλη μέρα και νύχτα και σκυλιά αλυσοδεμένα συνεχώς στο ίδιο σημείο. Έχω αναφέρει τρεις από αυτές τις περιπτώσεις στην τοπική αστυνομία, αλλά συναντώ νέες περιπτώσεις τακτικά. Σε άλλα μέρη του νησιού, σε περιβόλους στην άκρη του δρόμου, σε λιγότερο κατοικημένες περιοχές, έχω παρατηρήσει σκυλιά που μοιάζουν να μένουν ολομόναχα για αρκετό, έξω από το λογικό, διάστημα...»

Συνεχίζοντας ο κ. Jørgen Tellefsen Relling γράφει:

«Έχω αναφέρει τρεις από τις περιπτώσεις στο τοπικό αστυνομικό γραφείο στη Χώρα της Σκοπέλου και φαίνεται να έχουν λύσει τις δύο από αυτές. Ωστόσο, στην τρίτη περίπτωση οι καταστάσεις για τα σκυλιά δεν έχουν αλλάξει. Έκτοτε έχω συναντήσει αρκετές ακόμη περιπτώσεις παρόμοιας κακομεταχείρισης σκύλων σε άλλες τοποθεσίες σε όλο το νησί. Η κακομεταχείριση σκύλων φαίνεται να είναι ένα ευρέως διαδεδομένο πρόβλημα, που δεν λύνεται με μεμονωμένες αναφορές στην αστυνομία. Εάν οι αστυνομικές αρχές δεν εφαρμόζουν το νόμο με τρόπο που να προστατεύει αυτά τα σκυλιά, σας προτρέπω να θέσετε το ερώτημα σε πολιτικό επίπεδο, προτρέποντας τις αρχές να ενεργήσουν προληπτικά.»

Η επιστολή του κ. Jørgen έχει ως εξής:

Dear Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Chairman

ΑΡΧΕΙΟ

I contact you concerning dog welfare on Skopelos. I am a tourist staying at Skopelos this spring and summer, and I am concerned about how some dog owners treat their dogs.

In Elios / Neo Klima I have encountered dogs left alone in cages all day and night, and dogs chained constantly in the same spot. I have reported three of these cases to the local police, but I encounter new cases regularly. Other places on the island, in road-side enclosures in less populated areas, I have observed dogs that seem to be left all alone for what seems to be most of the time.

In addition to observing the distress and suffering of these dogs, as far as I can understand the laws governing animal welfare are clearly being broken in these cases. E.g. by article 5 point c) according to Greek law 4039/2012 the demands for animal well-fare are remarked. These animals are not able to perform the necessary exercise the law demands, and they do not seem to be given the attention from their care-takers that dogs need. Dogs are domesticated to seek contact with people, and when they bark or whine it is to establish contact with humans to express their needs. When this contact is not established the dogs do not live good lives and their needs can not be met. The dogs I have observed seem to be left alone for extended periods of time－far beyond what might be considered reasonable. They are alone outside also during night, and bark continuously during both day and night, as a sign of distress while trying to establish contact with the owner that does not tend to them. I have observed them multiple times, day and night, during cold and warm periods in winter and spring 2022, working-day and weekend, and the case seems to be the same at all times.

The combination of laws 4039/2012 & 4235/14 should cover the basic of what a dog owner is obliged to take care of, and these regulations are clearly not followed in the mentioned cases.

I have reported three of the cases to the local police office in Skopelos Town, and they seem to have solved two of them. However, in the third case the situations for the dogs have not changed. Since then I have encountered several more cases of similar maltreatment of dogs in other locations across the island. Maltreatment of dogs seems to be a widespread problem that is not solved by single reports to the police. If the police authorities do not apply the law in a way that protects these dogs I urge you to raise the question on a political level, making the authorities act proactively.

Skopelos is a beautiful place, but the amount of animal suffering present makes the experience bitter-sweet. I am distressed on behalf of the dogs, and I am sad that memories from this beautiful island are tainted by these cases of suffering. The main problem is the suffering for the animal, but in addition the barking and distress of the dogs keep people awake at night, unable to sleep both from the noise and from the feelings of hopelessness that these poor dogs express.

For the well-being of the dogs, for the future of Skopelos and its communities, and for the prosperity of the tourism on this island and in Greece in general, I urge you to address this problematic issue.
